Plaqued Houses and Buildings
Address:
422 Inglehart Street S - Stanley Chamberlain & Bertha Hannah Chamberalain House
Summary:
Stanley Chamberlain likely built this house himself in 1922.
Property Details:
This property was part of the Lot 13, 3rd Concession South of Dundas Street (SDS) which was part of the farm of John Alexander Chisholm, son of William Chisholm. His widow, Emelda Beeler Chisholm, sold this part to Peter Inglehart in 1908 who promptly sold it to Walter Inglehart. Walter split the property up for development. It's now known as the Inglehart Survey of 1909, or officially as Plan 126. The survey covered the land between Trafalgar Road and Reynolds Street, north of Spruce Street. When Cornwall Road was built, the layout of the area changed.

In 1911 Walter Inglehart sold this lot and other lots to Strachan Johnston. A year later they were sold to John Smith Marshall. In July 1919 Marshall sold them to Stanley and Bertha Chamberlain. In April 1923 Stanley sold the lot to the north to his brother William Jackson Chamberlain, known as Jackson. Stanley was a carpenter and probably built the house himself.

Stanley was born in 1888 on the family farm at Burnhamthorpe Road, east of Trafalgar Road. He was the eldest of eight children of Joel and Mary Chamberlain. By 1911, the family had relocated to Oakville living on the northeast corner of Pine Avenue and Reynolds Street. The house was the home of the Chamberlain family until 1981 when it was torn down as part of the preparatory work for Cornwall Road. In 1918 Stanley married Bertha Hannah and the following year purchased this lot. Until 1922 when this house was built, they rented on Spruce Street. In 1930 he sold this house and lived on Linbrook Road and then Chamberlain Lane which was named after the family. They both died in 1967.
