Address:
322 Reynolds Street - Frances "Elena" Savage House
Summary:
Frances Savage was a nurse.
Property Details:
This house stands on part of Park Lot L, Plan 1. In 1837 William Chisholm sold Park Lot L to Robert Willson. In 1892, Willson's estate sold it to John Kelley for $700. In 1904 John Kelley sold it to his wife, Isabella Atkinson Kelley and in 1907 bought it back from her. William Busby bought it on 13 July 1922 and the next day he and his wife sold part of it to Frances Elena Savage for $1 "and conditions"
Frances "Elena" Savage (her name appears as Elena and Ellena) was born in 1874 to Edward and Hannah Savage and grew up on the family farm which was located at the northwest corner of what is now Upper Middle Rd. and Ninth Line. Her father, in addition to being a farmer, was a County Councillor and Deputy Reeve and was one of the most prominent and highly esteemed residents of Trafalgar Township.
In 1889 Edward's wife Hannah died of consumption (tuberculosis) and Elena, being the eldest, likely had a hand in raising the other children ranging in age from 12 to only three. Also living on the farm were Edward's sisters Frances and Mary.
When Edward died in 1907, Elena's brother Belford took over the family farm and she remained there with him and his family. Sometime afterwards, Elena became a nurse.
In 1922 Elena purchased the lot at 322 Reynolds and had a house built which was completed in 1925. She continued to live there until selling it in 1963. She was a lifelong member of Sheridan United Church across the border in Mississauga and attended its 100-year anniversary in 1969 at the age of 95. She was a resident of Pine Hills Nursing Home in Clarkson and passed away in 1972 in her 99th year.
The death notice comes from an Ancestry family tree created by Jim Marshall.
We don't know where she worked as a nurse and would be very happy to add further information to the record.
