Plaqued Houses and Buildings
Address:
328 Trafalgar Road - The Meek's Home
Summary:
The Meeks lived in this home from 1922 to 1927.
Property Details:
Frank W. Meek purchased the lot on April 1, 1915 but the land remained vacant until 1921 when construction began. The house was completed the following year. Frank W. Meek listed himself in the census as a "Paint Manufacturer" likely at James Langmuir & Co. Ltd. located at Trafalgar & Cross. Meek sold the place in June of 1927 and he and his wife relocated to Oshawa where he became a partner in the Waterous-Meek Supply Co., fuel merchants. Unfortunately, though, they both were found dead a couple of months later in their bed due to "suffocation by illuminating gas". According to an article in the Toronto Daily Star, a suitcase had fallen against the gas valve in the basement and it opened, spewing gas fumes throughout the house into their bedroom through the heating pipes.
